The Victorian Era is essentially the backbone of today's fast evolving technology era. There was a lot of poverty in this era, the social classes were separated drastically between lower class, middle class, and upper classes. Inventions and innovation of certain Victorian practices helped merge the class structure and mold the world we live in today. Inventors such as William Cooke, Charles Wheastone, Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, and Thomas Twyford were constantly creating new things and taking old inventions and making innovations. As everybody uses computers today, in the Victorian Era the steam engine was the most used and widely popular invention. Cars, bicycles, the flushable toilet, electric light bulbs, the railway system, and the telephone were all revolutionary inventions that were created in the Victorian Era and everybody today takes them for granted because people have been born and raised around these inventions. The Victorian Era is perhaps the most revolutionary era in history where the most inventions were made.
The first page titled “Genre 1” includes a BuzzFeed “6 Victorian Inventions That You Wouldn't Believe Changed The World”. BuzzFeed usually creates a title that leaves the reader wondering what is the in article, so i created the title to help draw in readers who may not know much about the Victorian Era. The slideshow starts with the number one most revolutionary invention which is the steam engine, it shows a small description of the invention. The list was created by ranking a set of inventions by how they impacted the world in the past and present day and how shocking that they were created in the Victorian Era. The list includes a steam engine, radio, morse code, typewriter, oil(more efficient oil for lamps and eventually fuel), and the postage stamp and postal system. BuzzFeed is a fun website where the reader learns shocking things about a topic so by making this page i hope the reader is able to learn through a fun activity.
The second page titled “Genre 2” includes a Victorian Era timeline of the most popular inventions. From 1775 to 1903 of the Victorian Era there were some crazy, revolutionary, the genius inventions that were extremely futuristic for that time period. The timeline provides the reader with a huge list in which the can see the year, inventor, and the invention in which was invented. The inventions presented are fun, such as ice cream and a machine gun. Some of the inventions are used today in everyday life such as the post office, x-rays, gasoline, and the telephone. The timeline shows the reader just how many inventions were created in those years of the Victorian Era, and how they are still used today and will continue to be used for the next century.
The third page titled “Genre 3” includes a poem titled “Inventions and Innovation”. The poem is about how the Victorians were creating all these inventions. The poem goes back and forth between the positives and negatives of all of these new inventions. These inventions took many jobs from citizens because they made the job easier and required less people. For example the post office was hurt from the telephone and morse code because they can relay messages faster than a simple postage message. The steam engine helped bring goods across the country and world but put citizens out of jobs because they weren't using horse and wagon to bring goods across the country. The example i used was it use to take 5 men to plow a field and with a new invention it only takes one man to do the whole job. The poem wrapped up with ending by saying how this is unchanging and the world will always keep evolving and becoming better and they will just have to adapt to the ever changing world.
The fourth page titled “Genre 4” includes an advertisement page in which you can purchase the top three most popular inventions of the Victorian Era. The price was converted from the actual cost in US dollars to Victorian Era currency so the price is accurate to what it would cost back then. I have a item that a middle class/lower class person could possibly afford which is the lamp. The steam engine is very expensive but is used to advertise towards big businesses for shipping inventory and items. The last item is targeted for the upper class and it is a small automobile. These inventions were chosen to represent a common item for the middle class, businesses, and the upper class.
The fifth page titled “Genre 5” includes a birth certificate i created from scratch of Alexander Graham Bell. Alexander Graham Bell created the telephone, the gramophone, and a wire design called the twisted pair. The telephone enables the world to connect with each other no matter where they are. This invention was so futuristic of an idea most people would have never expected to be able to communicated through a signal on a phone.
This website on victorian inventions was created to inform the reader on the many aspects of the Victorian culture of inventions. So many inventions were created during that time period that majority of them still exist today in a shape or form. Although victorians believed that inventions would take their jobs (a lot of machines did) but the inventions and machines actually created new jobs. The Victorian Era of technology, inventions, and innovation helped shape the world into the world we live in today.
